I met with 3 of my friends today to wish each other well for the festive season and to discuss our goals for the future (whilst eating obscenely big slices of cheesecake and drinking very nice coffee at Mia Cafe in Inglewood). We have been meeting in each others homes (roughly once or twice a month) to work on our art (mostly textiles) for quite a while. We get on really well and today we decided we wanted to continue meeting - maybe a little more often and regularly. We discussed what we each want to do in the next couple of years and what is important to each of us in terms of our art. We discussed some individual and joint goals. We are thinking of having a group exhibition in 2014 - with venue, date, and all other details yet to be decided. I am going to create another blog which can only be accessed by the four of us so that we can post pictures of works in progress, results of experiements, and discuss how we're going to achieve everything. The picture above is of the Christmas pressies I received. Margaret was obviously really in the planning groove by providing us all with a calendar :-) Julie has challenged us by providing some materials to experiment with. And Louise challenged us all with some big questions to think about. I think the support and encouragement of the group will help us all stretch ourselves artistically. I also think the group will give us all the confidence to aim just that little bit higher and promote ourselves more than we each would have done alone.Lizhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06773353362953707392noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32813151.post-52560350968972375742012-12-04T08:07:00.001+08:002012-12-04T08:07:14.767+08:00Sold! Louise bought Fib #358 on the opening night of the Designing Women exhibition "Dimensions". At that point I hadn't embroidered a signature on it so last Tuesday while Louise, Margaret and Julie were visiting I did that. I also promised to give Louise a copy of the Artist Statement for it. This is an incredibly difficult work to photograph because the greater part of the work is white silk on white cotton stitched with a grey-white thread. Texture brings the work to life when it moves gently in an area with plenty of natural light. In real life the white bars stand out quite a bit - but this texture does not photograph well. I'm looking forward to seeing Fib #358 installed in it's new home.

The top photo is of a shirt and skirt I purchased at an op shop. The shirt had a linen bodice with an oversized collar that formed the sleeves as well. I'm not sure what the collar/sleeves fabric is. It withstands a hot iron and although quite a loose weave is fairly stiff. It has a lovely lustre and I think it might be ramie. The skirt is 100% cotton and quite thin. My plan is to make 5 petals like this one and five petals from the cotton fabric. I intend to put the ones with a sheen at the front and the matt ones at the back to form a flower with 10 petals. I may put more stitching on these leaves - especially round the edges - but I'm going to wait until I have made all 5 to this stage. This is to reduce the risk of running out of the variegated rayon thread as I would like all 5 to have a very similar appearance. This one petal has taken hours already! But that does include lots of mucking around auditioning fabrics and making paper petal mockups to test the final size.Lizhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06773353362953707392noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32813151.post-33588062741360329692012-11-14T10:19:00.000+08:002012-11-14T10:19:22.191+08:00Skin cancer

I have just had a little skin cancer removed from my neck. Now I wait 10 days to find out if it's nasty or not. I can take this dressing off after 3 days and then I'll be able to see if Dr Azucar's sewing is as neat as mine :-) The nurse said he'd done a very neat job.Lizhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06773353362953707392noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32813151.post-67988746582445275382012-11-14T10:11:00.000+08:002012-11-14T10:11:24.995+08:00Dimensions Exhibition

Dimensions, an exhibition by Designing Women, opened at the Nyisztor Gallery, 391 Canning Highway, Melville, Western Australia on Friday evening at 7pm. The exhibition runs until Sunday November 25th. It is open Tuesday to Sunday (NOT Mondays) from 10am to 4pm. Entry and parking are off Stock Road. The gallery used to be a library and has a central lightwell which we had made special white challenge pieces for, and they suited that space very well. I was part of the team involved in the setting up of the display and learnt a lot from Ron about what makes a successful exhibition.

Dimensions was opened by Dr Geoff Lummis from ECU who was a personable speaker - but embarrassed me no end by referring to my work several times. We have a red challenge as part of the display - my face was competing well with that - especially after a wine or two :-) Several works were sold at the opening - including one of mine called Fib #358. I found out later in the evening that it was bought by one of my friends so that was a huge bonus. - there seemed to be quite a bit of interest in that piece and I think I could have sold it several times over!

I think we have pulled off a very successful exhibition and would encourage anyone interested in contemporary textiles to go and see it - just don't go on a Monday!Lizhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06773353362953707392noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32813151.post-91970414709716057462012-10-23T12:37:00.002+08:002012-10-23T12:37:16.812+08:00Indigo Dyeing

At the last Designing Women meeting Dorothy set up an Indigo dye bath for us all to try. None of us had done this before. It was a cool day and Dorothy set it up on the verandah. She used the pre-reduced Indigo which requires Sodium Hydrosulphite and Soda Ash to be added to the mix. I was busy while Dorothy set up so I didn't see that part. Once everyone else had dyed their prepared silk scarves I put in 2 blouses I had rescued from the Op Shop. This silk blouse was originally the palest of pale pinks and the linen/cotton blouse was originally an extremely pale khaki colour. They both fitted me well but I didn't like the colours. When I bought them I thought I would save them for a dyeing opportunity - and this was it :-) I put them in once only for about 2 minutes. I've since found out that to get even colour you put them in, then remove them for 15-20 mins and reimmerse them, repeating as often as necessary to get darker and more even coverage. I actually wanted the blotchy look so I was quite happy with the results. The stitching was obviously a sythetic thread on the linen blouse but I think it looks quite decorative. I will replace the stitching which holds the 2 lace panels together at the front though. It did take a lot of rinsing remove excess dye. I think these are definitely "wearable". They are displayed here on "Freda" - my duct tape dress making dummy.

Linda is lucky enough to have quite a large wet studio space set up in a seperate building just behind their house. She specialises in dyeing and printing onto fabric. Linda does her stitching in one of the rooms in the house. The wet studio space was large enough that we were all able to sit down to listen to Linda talk about her life, her art training (taken on later in life after children) and the work on display. When asked about various pieces Linda was very generous with details about how certain effects were achieved, and showed us some of the tools she uses (handmade stamps, stencils etc). What amazed me the most was how very simple stamps (a few squares of foam on a bit of Corflute for example) can be used to make the most complex fabric. I've made a few stamps myself but not used them because they look "boring"! I will have to dig them all out and have a go at creating some fabric with many layers of print to see if I can transform "boring" into "amazing" as Linda does.

Linda has a shop on Etsy where she sells Thermofax screens that she makes. She has a few of her own designs but will also create custom screens for other artists from images emailed to her. I bought one yesterday and am looking forward to giving it a go. Linda is a wonderful teacher, and her workshops for various techniques are always very informative. Linda has a blog here.Lizhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06773353362953707392noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32813151.post-10168292783078404172012-07-12T14:04:00.002+08:002012-07-12T14:21:49.528+08:00Concentrating on my Art WorkI have taken the big step of closing the Lizard of Oz website and not selling English Piecing papers, templates or patterns any more. This was a really difficult decision as it's been a part of my identity for the past 12 years. I found that I felt guilty about not doing Lizard of Oz "stuff" when doing my own artwork, and when I did Lizard of Oz work I felt that I wasn't really following my heart anymore. My artwork has moved away from quilting and more into printing, drawing and painting. So I decided some radical action was necessary. I would like to thank all the customers and friends who have been supportive of Lizard of Oz during all that time. There are 2 businesses that I know of who specialise in English Piecing and Applique, Patchwork with Busy Fingers and The Quilt Fairy. I hope they will be able to help you. Meanwhile I get to play in my studio without guilt! :-)Lizhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06773353362953707392noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32813151.post-45662617325129064372012-02-17T09:03:00.002+08:002012-02-17T09:15:30.300+08:00"Embryo" painting for KateThis is a detail of the pen and ink drawing/painting that I made for my sister's 50th birthday. The centre has various classes running during school terms. There were also works by Robin Bray. Works were displayed mainly in one large room, along corridors and some works were in rooms where classes were being held (it is understood that it is ok for visitors to interrupt classes to look at works). Lighting is adequate. Rowena had a lot of work on display - about an equal mix of paintings and textiles. Although quite an eclectic mix overall there were several series-style works where Rowena had explored one particular stitch technique or various colour paint combinations on a similar size canvas. Rowena had sold some work, and at the time I visited there were some works still for sale which I am sure will have found a new home before the end of the exhibiiton.

True Colours runs from 19-28 August 2011 at The Tresillian Centre, 21 Tyrell St, Nedlands, WA and is open from 10-4 daily. Phone 08 9389 1977. On weekdays there is a cafe on the premises open 9am-2pm during term time and I enjoyed my lunch there in the very pleasant courtyard.

I never met Elsje but I had heard about her from other textile artists here in WA. Elsje was head of textiles at Edith Cowan University in 1989 and I imagine ECU is where many local artists came into contact with her. The works are well presented and there is a dvd of Elsje describing her work, her philosophy and her inspirations. I spent quite a bit of time there on my own absorbing the essence of Elsje's work and I would recommend taking the time to watch the dvd while you're there as it adds greatly to the meaning of some of the works on display. I would describe this as a "must see" exhibition.

Presence runs from 7 August to 11 September 2011 at The Gallery, 34 Main Street, Ellenbrook, Western Australia. Gallery hours are 10am-2pm Mon-Fri and 1pm-5pm weekends.

Do go, it will be well worth the trip - and Dome is just across the road from the Gallery if you forget your cut lunch and water bag - grin.

My friend Margaret was unable to attend a workshop on Sunday with textile artist Carole Redlich which had been organised by the 84 Group so suggested I go in her stead. I had a ball. Carole had created some 3D pieces using fabric, yarns, plastics, stitched acetate, transfers and various other transparent or semi transparent "stuff". The "stuff" was trapped in a laminating pouch which was cut into shapes and then machine-stitched with loops of various weights of fishing line. The loops and shapes were manipulated into pleasing 3D shapes and then joined together on the sewing machine. We also did some free-style weaving of the fishing lines to create some structure to attach the laminated loopy bits to. I thoroughly enjoyed myself even if I was slow and didn't actually produce much on the day.

The images are of trapped invisible sewing thread with white polyester and rayon sewing threads, trapped feathers with large-bubble packaging plastic, the one loop I created during class using small bubble wrap, and the free weaving of the heavy weight fishing line. Not having done any woven basketry before I concentrated on learning the technique for this on the basis that I could stitch on plastic anytime at home alone. It was a great class - thank you Carole (and Margaret of course).

The wire framework for this took me about 8 hours and the wrapping with thread has taken ages although I haven't noted exactly how long. Because the wrapping takes so long I'm debating whether to complete this with papier mache or to continue wrapping. The original idea was to wrap with yarn/fabric and then use some sort of waterproofing polymer to make it hard and paintable. I'm using the time it takes for this initial wrap to decide. I'm making this initial wrap so that there is some texture for the papier mache (or the sucessive wraps of yarn if I go that route) to cling to so that it doesn't slip around on the armature once it's dry. I'm using fine yarn for this stage because I want the finished work to be quite thin. I think papier mache might be quicker because the strips would be much shorter and therefore easier to handle. Comments and advice from anyone who has done anything like this previously would be welcome.

I'm quite pleased with the result. I need to knit/felt a strap as well but I haven't done that yet. This was knitted with one strand of the handspun and the felt is really quite thick. I plan to embroider and/or dry felt onto this to liven it up a bit.

I knitted some more of the handspun up with some really bright pink synthetic yarn (acrylic?) and this is a photo before I felted it. I still have more handspun left so I will knit that up with some other yarn but I'm waiting to see what the result is from this one first. If I don't like the effect with a synthetic (which I think will sort of bobble up) then I'll knit the rest with some other wool to try and create a striped felt. This one may also come out very thick because I knitted with the 2 yarns together. I started it before I felted the first one and didn't realise how much it would thicken up - this pink/brown one might be so thick I won't be able to stitch through it!

Lizhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06773353362953707392noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32813151.post-77914873781118502742011-04-15T10:31:00.005+08:002011-04-15T10:41:14.022+08:00Birthday Goodies Again Again

My sister sent me gift tokens for my birthday from http://www.perfume.com.au/ and this is what I chose. While we were there at the weekend Joan and Mal took us to the local Chinese for tea (where Andrea is working part time) to celebrate my birthday. Andrea was our waitress for some of the evening - which felt really strange because it only seems like yesterday that she was born and we became Godparents!

Lizhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06773353362953707392noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32813151.post-47973870050248150452011-04-06T12:32:00.006+08:002011-04-06T13:02:24.877+08:00Birthday goodiesRuss took the day off work so we had the whole day together. We had lunch out in the hills and visited the Mundaring Art Gallery. In the evening we went to see "The Ugly One" play at the new theatre complex in Perth. A very enjoyable day and relaxing day. My sister sent me vouchers so that I can choose some perfume online and I plan to do that this afternoon. My friend Joan has been slowly decluttering (v-e-r-y, v-e-r-y, s-l-o-w-l-y) and last time I visited I suggested I could help by giving some of her hand dyed wool a new home as I had enjoyed making some arty felt pieces recently. So this is the great bundle I received at the weekend when we visited. Lots of wool with some hand spun yarn, some silk tops, and some commercial embroidery threads. Joan used to keep her own sheep so some of this could have been "home grown". Although I'm looking forward to creating with this little lot I'm going to just look at it all for a while until inspiration hits.Lizhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06773353362953707392noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32813151.post-19568480490860909212011-02-14T09:10:00.001+08:002011-02-14T09:21:41.566+08:00Natural Dyed SilkThis is the same piece of silk as in the previous post. The first colour was from cloves. This golden yellow is from Tumeric. It was boiled for an hour. The white spot is light reflecting from the tiles - it is difficult to photograph because it is so transparent and the bathroom tiles gave the best image. The close up photo is the truest in colour. I haven't quite decided whether to do more to this piece or not. I'm going to keep it hanging around to see if I have any further ideas. All members received a piece of silk which we are to dye using any Shibori technique. I have stitched 3 sets of 3 rows of running stitch which I have gathered up. I boiled 4 tablespoons of dried cloves for an hour and then strained off the liquor. Then I boiled the fabric for 1.5 hours in that liquor. I love the smell of cloves - good job as you could smell it all through the house and down the street! Now that it is dry I am going to bind over some of the already stitched parts and boil it with some Tumeric.
Lizhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06773353362953707392noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32813151.post-48983005396461069572010-12-20T13:14:00.008+08:002010-12-20T13:34:54.914+08:00Floral Skirt Finished

It took several days to free machine embroider all the flowers. The edges have been left raw so that when I wash it the edges will fray slightly to give it a softer look. I stitched round the edges of each flower twice so the fraying won't go beyond that. I'm pleased with the result - not too "folksy" at all (grin). I'm thinking of making a similar skirt but in a riot of colours next time. I embroidered the t-shirt a while ago with beige lazy daisies so it goes quite well with the skirt.

Lizhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06773353362953707392noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32813151.post-83126411905695295902010-11-19T08:06:00.005+08:002010-11-19T08:16:26.292+08:00Floral skirtI spent a few days cutting out flowers and circles from muslin and gauze to stick all over this plain 3/4 circle skirt. The skirt is very lightweight cotton so drapes beautifully but of course is also a little bit transparent with the light behind it. That's why I'm putting flowers all over it :-)
My young friend Andrea helped me cut some of them out when we stayed at their place over the weekend. It took another few evenings to iron them all on. I plan to machine embroider over all the flowers with another shade of browny-beige. I'm hoping at the end it will look sophisticated beige rather than boring beige :-) I just hope it doesn't look too "folksy".Lizhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06773353362953707392noreply@blogger.com1
